about
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is a historic African-American spiritual and was first written by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory, sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River, which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah's being taken to heaven by a chariot.
lyrics
I looked over Jordan, and what did I see,
Comin' for to carry me home.
A band of angels comin' after me,
Comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home.
I'm sometimes up and sometimes I'm down,
Comin' for to carry me home.
But still my soul feels heavenly bound.
Comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home.
